United States of America

Kansas City

The United States is a nation in North America, bordered by Canada to the north, Mexico to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Christianity in the United States has its roots in the colonial period. Early settlers—such as the Pilgrims and Puritans—came to the New World seeking religious freedom. As the colonies grew, Christianity spread rapidly, with Protestant denominations taking strong root. Catholicism arrived largely through Spanish, French, and later Irish and Italian immigrants.

In the centuries that followed, American Christianity became diverse, with multiple denominations shaping the religious landscape. The First and Second Great Awakenings ignited spiritual revivals across the nation, emphasizing personal faith and evangelism. Over time, the U.S. became home to nearly every branch of Christianity—Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox—each adding to the nation’s spiritual heritage.

In more recent history, American Christianity has faced new challenges. As the nation became increasingly secularized, church attendance declined, and faith was often pushed to the margins of public life. Political and cultural divisions have sometimes weakened the witness of the church, and many Christians have struggled to navigate the balance between faith and culture in a rapidly changing society.

This has caused great strain on the church in the United States, with many believers wrestling with apathy, division, and a lack of clear Christian identity. Yet, even amid these struggles, there is hope and renewal taking root.

Our missionaries in the United States are working to help repair the wounds caused by division and cultural drift, and to cultivate genuine Christian faith through the power of art and community. They are creating art, music, and photography classes as a way to build relationships with people, especially youth, and to use those opportunities to share the Gospel in authentic and creative ways.
